Four Trees Kilchberg-Zurich
A journey through the landscape
The residential development “Four Trees” is located in Kilchberg, south of Zurich’s city centre, and sits atop a moraine landscape, shaped by the Rhein-Linth glacier. The proposed building volumes are moved away from the natural ridgeline and placed along the slopes to create a large landscape park. The park becomes a central meeting point and a direct extension of the surrounding landscape.
The landscape concept is based on the exploration and discovery of the outdoor space through a meandering path, connecting four large existing trees and all building entrances with each other. The journey through the landscape begins at the foot of the hill, with a semi-public plaza featuring a drinking fountain and shaded benches. This also creates an address for the project, which is currently missing.
The meandering path leads through a variety of open spaces, programmes and planting typologies. Along the steep slopes of the site, a forest fringe with a native plant community (woodruff-beech forest) is established, embedding the buildings and strengthening the local biodiversity. The central park is inspired by the open, inviting character of the surrounding landscape, and designed as a tranquil meeting place for residents. Between buildings and the park is a transitional zone of private gardens, separated from the central area with dense evergreen shrub planting but without fences or walls. The final typology is a three-dimensional zone formed by planted facades and green roofs, promoting biodiversity, and improving the overall building climate.
