Nibelungen Plaza Tulln
Exploring the dynamics of the River Danube
The concept design for the new Nibelungen Plaza in Tulln explores the dynamics of the adjacent River Danube and makes natural erosion processes a tangible part of the landscape. Streams of people (from and into the city centre) meet in the plaza area. Similar to the gravel accumulations in the Danube, this creates dynamic and quiet areas. The movement manifests itself in paving patterns, quiet areas are formed as green or gravel islands. Based on this simple principle, the spatial structure of the plaza maximises greening and shade. A hybrid typology between park and plaza is created. Different uses and functions can be integrated into this robust and scenic framework.
The gardens of the former monastery are planned in a simple, geometric form and integrate into the design of the square in a natural way. Low trimmed hedges create an interior space that subtly contrasts with the square and allows conflict-free use.
In addition, the history of the city of Tulln as a garden city is represented in the form of a biodiverse planting concept that is attractive all year round as well as climate-sensitive and future-oriented. The tree selection forms a small arboretum, and oversized stone sculptures in the form of plant seeds bear witness to the botanical spirit of the city.
As part of the climate resiliency strategies greening, shading and permeable surfaces were maximised, improving the microclimate and thermal comfort.
