University of Music and Performing Arts - Graz
A public plaza at the heart of the university
Situated between the historic Palais Meran and two major theatre venues, the site will become a focal point for student life and a hub for some of the city’s most dynamic music and performing arts events.
Our proposal focuses on the needs of the university’s diverse user groups, creating an inclusive and flexible public space for students, staff, and visitors. The design strengthens the university’s public presence, enhances biodiversity, and ensures thermal comfort during the hot summer months through tree planting and cooling water elements.
The tree-covered square in front of the Palais is complemented by a subtle yet widely visible 'suspended ring' a distinctive, multifunctional feature. This element defines the space below, illuminates the square in the evening, and serves as a stage for urban life and artistic expression.
A key feature of the new plaza is the maximization of permeable surfaces and the strategic integration of tree planting, carefully coordinated with underground services and the university’s operational needs. Intensive greening, using trees, shrubs, and perennials, enhances rainwater evaporation, provides natural shade, and improves the microclimate. Two drinking fountains at the square’s entrances offer additional refreshment. Committed to a circular economy, we are reusing as many existing materials and furniture as possible.
